Merle Hoffman Wins Prestigious Front Page Award

by Editors

We are delighted and proud to announce that the Newswomen's Club of New York has awarded Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Merle Hoffman its 2010 Front Page Award for political commentary. Hoffman’s article, “Selecting the Same Sex”, appeared in the “Our Genders Our Rights” edition of On The Issues Magazine and discusses the complex, troubling practice of aborting female fetuses while firmly upholding women's right to abortion.

In her provocative article, Hoffman states: “I have spent the better part of my life defending the principle of reproductive freedom and have provided the service to thousands of women for over 38 years because, ultimately, women do and should have the right to make what may be to others the wrong choice…It’s about separating the chooser from the choice.”

The Front Page Awards, established in 1937 for women journalists, are among the longest established awards in the field. Other 2010 winners include writers from Reuters, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, and past awardees have included CNN's Christiane Amanpour, Newsweek writer and author Anna Quindlen and New York Post columnist and On The Issues contributor Andrea Peyser.

Gloria Feldt, a contributor to On The Issues Magazine, just published a new book, No Excuses. In an article in the Café Theresa Noll calls it “a useful starting point for those seeking guidance on how to build leadership.”

“The most confounding problem facing women today," Feldt writes, "is not that doors aren't open, but that women aren't walking through the open doors in numbers and with intention sufficient to transform society's major institutions once and for all."

On The Issues offers more than just cutting-edge written commentary in each edition--original art compliments each article as well. Art editor Linda Stein carefully curates, picking works that help the reader to fully contemplate the complexities of each issue. Check out our archives or our Flickr page!
